Why do we emulate sport stars? One reason is that we are not that good or disciplined. However, to make the athlete into a role model is a different realization. Athletes who play professional sports should be admired for what they have accomplished. Many have overcome a childhood of poverty and have risen about a beginning where the odds were stacked against them. Once they make it to the major leagues they have certainly accomplished more than most. However, holding these athletes up as role models may be wrong. Athletes in themselves are not role models. What about the professional athletes that sit on the bench and rarely play? You never hear about them, but they may be equally talented as more popular players. For every Michael Jordan’there are many Michael Vicks. Many professional athletes have a criminal record before they make the big time. Continue reading »
