Bailout Or Bankruptcy?

The word “bankruptcy” comes from the Latin word “bancus”(a bench or table)  and “ruptus” (broken).  A “bank” was originally a bench that the first bankers set up in public places like markets or fairs. On these benches, they wrote their bills of exchange. When a banker failed, he broke his bank or his bench to indicate he was no longer in a condition to continue doing business with. At least those early bankers were ethical enough to tell their customers they were insolvent and you shouldn’t do business with them anymore. “Bailout” comes from the Latin word “baiulare” which means to “carry a load” for someone else or to be the “carrier of their burden.” Applied to the current global economic conditions, bankruptcy would mean allowing a bank, a corporation, city, state, or a country to fail and start over fresh. A bailout means trying to remove water from a sinking boat by repeatedly filling a bucket and tossing the water over the side. If you slow down or stop bailing, the boat eventually sinks anyway no matter how long or how fast you bailed. Many banks, corporations, cities, and countries are sinking boats that need to be allowed to sink no matter how big they are. You can’t bail forever.

Bailout Or Failout?

Back in September 2011, bloggers and major news sites were talking about the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) that wanted to boost its bailout fund to $5 trillion. At the time, the EFSF only had an inadequate $384 billion. Only $4.6 trillion short. Now, with recession and credit rating cuts looming, it seems everyone can come up with a “long-term plan” but few can come up with an immediate fix. Any immediate fixes need to contain strategies and tactics to keep banks from collapsing, keep the markets from tumbling, and governments from defaulting. This is, needless to say, a tall order. Plus, the next meeting for the Finance Ministers from the world’s major economic powers doesn’t occur until February.

Will struggling banks and countries be able to hang in there long enough for someone – anyone to come to the rescue? Or, with the continuing problems of government debt, economies approaching a deep recession, and nations’ and banks’ credit ratings getting cut is there hope for the EU and the Euro? Could allowing insolvent banks and countries to fail be the best option?

Euro Economy Crisis – Worst Yet To Come

The worst is yet to come for the Euro economy. This is based in realism and not pessimism. The Euro-Magicians have done some of their best tricks. They sawed Greek debt in half, made Euros appear out of nowhere, and are making leaders of countries  disappear. And they’re just warming up. For the finale, a giant debt bubble will vaporize into thin air…exactly what it was built on.

Euro Economy Crisis – Swing Your President Round and Round

Let’s do the Euro Dance. We’ve seen Prime Minister Papandreou ‘step aside’ and now Prime Minister Berlusconi wants to do the same, but only after he lays heavy austerity measures on the Italian people. I guess he wants to give Italians something to remember him by when this billionaire Prime Minister retires to one of his many mansions. How many more Presidents and Prime Ministers will be shown the door? Certainly, Papandreou and Berlusconi won’t be the last.

Euro Economy Crisis – Spreading To The States

Americans will learn that they have more in common than ancestry with Europeans. They’ll see that not only does America owe more money than Europe, but Canada or Mexico are not going to bail them out. Banks and over-leveraged trading firms who are both in over their heads with defaulting sovereign debt investments and derivatives losses will flip upside down like beetles, legs flapping in the air. It will be discovered that everybody owes everybody tens of trillions of dollars and nobody has money to pay anyone back. It’s now every man and country for themselves. There’s not even enough money in the world to cover the risky bets that have been made by the greedy financial manipulators.

Will it start to dawn on Americans and Europeans that they won’t be able to live like Americans or Europeans any longer? That the booming economy of the past that was held up by a complex, international fiscal house of cards is no more? Will they have a new word in their vocabulary – “austerity” – to cope with? Many have been forced way past austerity already. Drastic measures will need to be taken to avoid civil and financial unrest around the world from becoming more than just protests.

Global Economic Wipeout Coming 

What have Governments and central banks done in an effort to stave off the global economic wipeout that’s coming? They’ve tried bailing out their banker friends, injecting massive amounts of money into the economy via government spending, tax breaks, near-zero interest rates, quantitative easing, and running the printing presses. By doing this, they were betting on the return of growth and inflation and that the economy would stabilize itself, jobs would return, and we’d live happily ever after. Bad bet. Although technically, a depression was averted, the result showed up as a deep recession we have really never pulled out of since 2008. Now we’re in an extended recession; sort of a Recession 2.0.  Instead of trying to figure out ways to address the huge debt/insolvency problems that stretched across continents, governments propped up demand artificially and financially stronger countries got together to bail out their fiscally mismanaged neighbors with Greece becoming the poster child of fiscal stupidity. You can’t fix stupid.   

Global Economic Wipeout – What Banks Did With Their Bailout Money

After causing a near-global economic wipeout, what did governments think banks would do with their bailout money? Would they try to figure out ways to improve consumption, create jobs, or make non-risky investments? They did the opposite. They are laying off tens of thousands of workers, still gambling money away in the derivatives casino, and they cut-off credit to small businesses who could create some jobs. Banks used the money to make record profits for themselves. Banks now make nearly one-third of all corporate profits in America. They’re even bigger than they were before the recession hit in 2008. The largest ten banks hold 60% of all bank assets. In 2008, the year the recession took off, nine banks that received the most bailout money paid 5,000 of their traders and executives bonuses of more than $1 million apiece. And you wonder why Occupy Wall Street is protesting?

Global Economic Wipeout Caused By Implosion of Debt

An implosion of debt is what will eventually cause the global economic wipeout. What happens when an individual incurs more debt than they can ever pay back? They default, go bankrupt, and start over. Nobody seems to want a country to default though. Central banks and other governments want to bail them out, impose austerity measures on the citizens which involve higher taxes, wage cuts, reduced pensions, and more. This just postpones pain as the debt doesn’t go away – it increases – and people are burdened with the increased payback. The ability for the country to pay back their debt didn’t change as higher taxes on lower wages doesn’t increase tax revenues. 

What will happen when protectionism sets in and countries decide to stop bailing out their broke neighbors? Will the U.S. continue to find customers to buy up Treasury debt and endlessly keep propping up their banker friends with more bailouts? When will another country default and refuse to pay back their debt? What should people do to protect themselves?

Global Economy Implosion

People are coming around to the fact that the global economy is imploding. European Central Bank President, Jean-Claude Trichet told the world yesterday what everybody already knew: the European economy is in sad shape and getting sadder by the day. Governments, already struggling to pay their bills, aren’t collecting enough tax revenues due to the crippled economy. A CNBC Europe guest last week, when asked how he would describe the global economy summed it up in six words…”The world is in a mess.” That pretty much sums it up.

Why The Implosion Of The Global Economy Is Taking So Long

To understand why the implosion of the economy is taking so long, you have to look at how it was designed. When money is hard to borrow, productivity is encouraged; but when money is cheap to borrow, speculation in risky assets runs rampant and debt-based consumption is encouraged. Soon, the debts exceed the value of the assets and the only way to stop the cycle is to write the debt off the books of the borrower and lender. This does not sit well with the financial elite who create the bubbles in the first place for their personal gain.

Bubbles are created for the 90% of people, whose wages have stagnated over the past 25 years, as an “illusion” of wealth…e.g. rising home prices or a tech stock bubble. Then, when the bubbles pop, the bankers push the toxic assets onto the taxpayers. A good example would be Bank of America transferring toxic Countrywide debt to Fannie and Freddie, or the Fed purchasing Treasuries via QE2. This is done behind the smokescreen of creating a wealth effect (“stimulus”) for the economy, but is really just transferring debt to the public in its sneakiest form. Whether it’s explained as spending trillions to “save the world’s economy from collapsing on Monday” or “to stimulate the recovery” it’s just bailing out corrupt bankers and deadbeat corporations – the campaign contributors to the political elite – so they can continue business as usual. As long as this process goes on, the global economy will continue to implode and, like a cancer eating away at its host, it will just die a slow and painful death.

Attempts To Stop The Implosion Of The Global Economy

Attempts to stop the implosion of the global economy have only been  attempts to save the things bankers want to see propped up…the stock markets, themselves, the Eurozone, the powerful international corporations, etc. This is the “kick the can down the road” method you’ve heard about on TV. Keep the “old system” running for as long as bankers can drain money out of it. It doesn’t change the situation, but only pushes the problem out and postpones the pain. This also puts countries in the position of increasing public debt and crippling their economy with higher taxes and costs to service the debt. The international bankers and their puppet politicians have a name for these painful, financial impositions forced onto citizens; they’re called “austerity measures.” The obvious solution would be to stop privatizing profits which keep these criminal bankers afloat, and make them accountable for their own losses. But the international bankers, power elite, and the politicians who hang off them like barnacles on a ship don’t like this option. It stops their gravy train. Push losses onto citizens, and let the global economy implode as long as we can still make billions in profits, receive multi-million dollar bonuses, and keep our mansions around the world.  

So, the global economy looks like a double-edged problem – allowing more debt to pile up leads to the inevitable default of countries. Or, make the financial elite take responsibility for their actions and possibly be wiped out. Countries gone or bankers gone – which do you prefer?

Economies Like All Things Come To An End

All things come to an end and economies are like all things. While some things just linger on until one day they just fade away, others postpone death like a stubborn relative on life support with nobody deciding it’s time to pull the plug and collect the little remaining inheritance that is left that hasn’t been squandered on keeping Uncle Veggie alive. That’s the situation the world’s economies are in. Countries are dying, trying to survive on fiscal life support, and nobody wants to pull the plug.

Patience Like All Things Comes To An End

How long will countries wait to be paid back? Everybody owes everybody. Everybody gobbled up the sovereign debt of other countries and now these lenders are in trouble and need to be bailed out by Central and International bankers. Their economies are on the ropes and just one or two rounds from that knockout punch, but they keep getting knocked down and get back up, just beating the count to fight another round. Soon, these creditor nations will realize that they aren’t really holding anything of monetary value from these other countries. They are holding the worthless IOU’s of other bankrupt governments. Countries that can’t even pay the interest on what they owe much less the principle.

Wars Like All Things Must Come To An End

All the multiple wars the US is involved in with their allies are going poorly and becoming financially unmanageable. When you combine this with the troubles at home around unemployment, a housing crisis, an education crisis, a growing poverty crisis, cities in decline, weather disasters, and a ‘sky-is-falling’ stock market you get the recipe for an economy under attack from all directions. Meanwhile, the US keeps spending beyond its means, jockeying for new, permanent bases around the world in a classic empire-building scenario.

All Things Must Come To An End

It’s difficult for people to let go. They want to cling on to what was – what they loved about the past. It was familiar even if it was sometimes painful. There was too much to gain and not enough pain to let it go. That’s what’s interesting about something new. You are never sure if you move on you’ll be successful enough or experience the type of wealth you had in the past. You never know what the future holds. The only “for sure” thing is that all things do change and, if you are willing to let go of the past, you may open yourself up to new experiences that are more fulfilling than anything in your past. You may redefine your definition of “wealth.”

Word of the Day

Interesting things are happening in the global economy. Right now, Ben Bernanke is thinking of a new word to call printing money. It used to be called just “printing money,” then it became “Quantitative Easing” (QE). This is the same person who said on ’60 Minutes’ that the US was not printing money, but that is what QE2 was – printing money – he just wouldn’t admit it, which is called lying in some circles. He can’t use the term QE again, so he needs to come up with a new word that means monetary inflation.

The Bureau of Lying Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the consumer price index (CPI) last week and tried to spin the results so it doesn’t look like inflation is out of control. The reported inflation rate in May was 3.7%, a rate that has tripled over the last 6 months. This “Core CPI” was invented by Nixon to deceive Americans by getting them to believe inflation was not a problem. He decided to exclude from the equation anything Americans had to buy that was rising the most in price – like food and gasoline. Nixon and lies? There seems to be a connection here.

Inflation Is ‘Over There’

Like the economic meltdowns, potential defaults, and rioting in the streets, inflation is happening ‘over there’ somewhere. While the news downplays America’s inflation, it spends much time talking about China’s terrible inflation problem of 5.5%. Is China that much worse than the US, or do they just report the actual numbers?

Too Bad They Can’t Print Euros

It’s too bad that any European country in threat of default and needing a bailout just can’t go print all the Euros they need, just like America prints dollars. This would solve the whole mess. Or would it? They can’t, so they need a bailout or two or three to survive and the IMF, the loan sharks of last resort, steps in. Now, countries have austerity measures forced on the citizens to pay for the over-spending and over-borrowing of their government. In Greece, the citizens tried burning down the Finance ministry. That’s how well they took it.

Where Will Banks Get More Money?

When banks run out of money to lend to irresponsible countries that can’t pay it back and they go broke, where will they get more money? Who will be the suckers of last resort who are willing to give these insolvent banks money? What will happen when the banking system as we know it finally breaks down and CEO’s won’t be able to get their multi-million dollar bonuses? There’s a finite amount of money in the world. That is, unless you can just print more of it any time you want.

Enron-style accounting helped conceal their troubles for awhile and allowed governments to continue their entitlement-driven economic models. But now it has caught up to all of them….especially Greece, Portugal, and Ireland, with Italy, Spain and others lining up behind them to plead their cases for future bailouts. 

German and French banks stepped in and bought up the government bonds of these failing countries with rising interest premiums. Ratings agencies, downgrading the debt of countries, make it more difficult for struggling governments to survive a default without needing a bailout and selling their souls to get it. 

Banking cartels like the IMF, European Central Bank (ECB), the EU Commission along with other international banks have a strange definition of “rescuing” a country in trouble. The country must raise its taxes, lower spending on social entitlement programs, cut pension programs, and sell off public land, tourist sites and parks, ports, water and sewer facilities, utilities, airports, valuable natural resources, and more to the banks’ connected investors. What they have left is an in-debt country where citizens make less than they ever have and owe more and the government is told what to do by bankers. 

These concessions make the country less competitive in the international markets, forces a higher cost of living on citizens, and relieves the country of their national treasures and resources. Once resources are controlled by outside interests, people are hired at slave-labor wages to work for the new owners. 

Is this how the global economy will recover? Will the countries of the world become one big entity governed by international bankers who also control the military-industrial complex? By controlling the fiat money system through central banking and forcing countries into indebtedness, can bankers succeed in stealing the world’s individual and national wealth?

Also, like Greece and Ireland, Portugal is getting a bailout. The Eurozone’s dream is turning into a nightmare. This is an example of how a single economy doesn’t work. This casts doubts on a future “global economy” or even a regional one ever working. Do countries actually want to surrender their sovereignty to have a world currency much less a worldwide government and economy? Would people who even accept a world currency want to give up any of their freedoms and liberties to belong to a new one-world-economy where some people who joined gained freedoms while others lost some of theirs? Will the hard-working, law-abiding, taxpaying citizens of any developed country sit by idly as their pensions, wages, and retirement programs go down while taxes and food prices, education, healthcare, and energy go up? Would the US accept a world currency or would each state end up issuing their own currency anyhow? When you hear a politician talk about a “global economy” do they mean one currency controlled by one group of people who also control commerce, trade, and taxes between all the countries of the world? Or, does a healthy global economy mean people in all countries are employed, paying their fair share of taxes to keep the global economy operating, and their currency, whatever it is, is worth enough to buy food and shelter for their families, pay for their educations and whatever else they can afford? They are all former empires or becoming former empires. Decades of bad choices by political leaders has resulted in a death spiral for the American economy. And since the economy of the American empire affects so many other countries, what happens in the United States affects a global economy. Bad decisions were made that perpetuated themselves over and over again until they became habits. Then those habits became destiny and bring us to where we are today with a decaying economy. These decisions have also led to the lowest number of people in the labor force since the early 1980′s and people making 10% less than they did in 1965, adjusted for inflation.  Food and energy prices are running wild and stock markets are being held up artificially by stimulus. The government says we’re in a “recovery.” All the information and statistics you hear on the news seem rosy enough to support a recovery too. When the government tells you that 216,000 jobs were added in February that sounds like a high number. What they don’t mention is that, almost 3 million people have left the workforce and the entry level working age of the population has grown by over 3 million more. Did these people just get tired of working and leave the workforce? Are these all those baby boomers who are now rich enough to retire? Could these be the same baby boomers that the main stream news say have not saved enough to retire and will be working into their ’70′s? And what kind of jobs are being created? Are they meaningful jobs created for the betterment of a strong, balanced economy? No, they are financial analysts, accountants, lawyers, tax specialists, and investment brokers and bankers. Jobs for teachers, school administrators, nurses, waitresses and busboys have doubled since the 1960′s. With all these jobs being created in these sectors, the U.S. should be the wealthiest, healthiest and smartest country in the world. But the top 1% take home 40% of the wealth and we are the most obese, diabetic, and unhealthy nation on earth, spending more per person on health care than any other country. Our schools are not turning out thinking graduates or the needed scientific and engineering minds necessary to help a country “recover” in any meaningful way. McDonald’s announced last week that it was going to hire 50,000 people this month.  But, creating jobs that do not increase the overall wealth of the country and everyone in it is a sign of a country in decline.  In the last 18 months, while the U.S. has added 529,000 jobs for lawyers, accountants, consultants and tax specialists to decipher a 60,000-page IRS tax code, 193,000 jobs for waitresses and hotel busboys, and 238,000 clerks have been hired at Wal-Mart. GE has 975 of these tax specialists, attorneys, and accountants so they can pay no income taxes on over $14 billion in profits for 2010. Is this our future employment model? In 1961, the population of the U.S. was 184 million with 54 million employed and 15 million employed in manufacturing. Now, the population is 310 million with only 11 million employed manufacturing things. That equates to an increase of 68% in the population and a 22% decline in manufacturing jobs. It seems that the only things still made in America are construction equipment we sell to developing nations whose growth is outpacing America and weapons and planes we sell to our favorite dictators around the world. How much longer can this economic model hold up? And, what will be the outcome of these continued bad decisions on a once-great nation?
