It is as old-fashioned a crime as it gets, dating back centuries. More and more people are being kidnapped or abducted for many different reasons. Children are kidnapped or abducted by divorced parents, babies are kidnapped for sale, and express kidnappings are occurring in many countries where families or companies pay small ransoms. Hijackers are taking ships off the high seas and holding them for ransom, brides are kidnapped in certain countries, and hostages are taken somewhere everyday to force people into doing something against their will. Everybody seems to be getting into the abduction game. Human trafficking is the abduction and transportation of people against their will for forced labor or sexual exploitation. It is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world, second only to the drug trade. It accounts for billions of dollars annually and has reached epidemic proportions around the world. People trafficked for unskilled labor alone around the world generates over $30 billion a year. Millions of people around the world are being trafficked, mostly by organized crime operations. Trafficking is modern day slavery and 70% of the people trafficked across international borders are women and 50% are minors. People are also abducted and enslaved in their own countries, making them easy to move around and making statistics hard to track. Many people who are abducted and trafficked are reported as only “missing” and some may think they even disappeared on their own. An economic crisis leads to a sovereign debt crisis which, in turn, leads to a breakdown of the currency. This series of events leads to forced austerity measures we see being protested in Greece. What starts as civil unrest soon moves into people justifying criminal acts against those establishments and people they feel are responsible for their predicament. When people are pushed to the limit, there are no more limits. Once law-abiding citizens and model workers turn into the newest group of hooligans and criminals. Also, an economic crisis that destabilizes a country opens the door for organized crime to expand. It makes it easy for them to lure new recruits – people who never before thought about committing a crime – into a life where they can survive, make a living, and feel they belong to a family. With the situation in Europe where they share a currency but not a government, it puts unique challenges on an already strained continent where their survival is based on working together and not allowing their differences to get in the way of moving through this crisis while maintaining law and order. They defraud customers and clients, cheat the system, and are involved in Ponzi schemes, insider trading, selling information, cutting corners on quality, masking product faults, making false analyst statements, cooking the books, and designing questionable financial instruments sold to clients as solid investments while the seller went short on the same instrument. Now if you ask these people if they believe they are criminals, they will tell you, “It’s just business!” or “It’s all in a day’s work.” The definition of “business” in the sense of commerce is the exchange of goods or services for fair value. In the dictionary, the first definition of “fair” as an adjective is “aboveboard.” Some others are “honest” … “legitimate” … “principled” … “trustworthy” … and “uncorrupted.” So, business is supposed to be an honest and trustworthy exchange of value between two parties. Where did the process get off track? How did the fair exchange of goods or services between two parties become, “let’s see how much I can take advantage of you while making 100’s of millions of dollars doing it?” It appears that business has become more like a professional sporting event in the fact that a foul isn’t committed unless the ref sees it. Well, the ref has been seeing more and more of the questionable business dealings of our largest corporations and Wall Street lately. The SEC has accused Goldman Sachs of fraud for selling their clients toxic financial instruments as quality investments; all the while knowing that the company that put the product together for them was betting against the success of the product. That is like a car dealer selling you a new car and then the company that made the car bets you are going to get killed in it because of its poor quality. Or, like having your heart surgeon operate on you and then he takes out a life insurance policy on you, betting you are going to die soon because he’s aware of his sub-standard work. What happened to our sense of honest business ethics in dealing with our fellow man? Did we ever have them?
