How to play my picks . . . I’ve explained before how to play my picks. . . watch for them to move the direction I said and look to take small profits rather than always hoping to hit a home run. After your position moves in your favor by at least 1% – 2%, sell or cover 1/2 of it, moving your stop up to your entry point. This way, you can’t lose money. Let the remaining half keep running as long as you have positive momentum. When you are up another 1% – 2% (total of 2% – 4% on the second half) consider exiting the second half of your position. You have now made as much as 2% on the first half your investment and 4% on the other half for a total of 3% on the entire investment. Don’t get greedy, as it could turn around on you. If you are a day trader, this is $750 on a minimum $25,000 account! That’s a good income over the trading year. The secret is TIME + COMPOUNDING + MONEY = WEALTH! You’ll have a big fat cat smile on your face when you make money! And don’t forget to donate some of those profits to your local animal shelter. You’ll be glad you did and good Karma will come your way. I guess I’m just a Philanthra-Puss? OK, let’s make some extra “scratch!”

It’s all about looking good in the stock market.  Over the last two months, stocks have been up in 70% of the trading sessions.  So, 7 out of every 10 trading sessions (every 2 weeks) stocks are up and 3 days they are down.  On Mondays, stocks seem to rally about 1% or more.  When the market does decline, the declines are small – only about a quarter of a percent.  Banks, the most hated sector in the market, rally up 83% of the time and are up over 20% as a group.  The Wall Street Journal reported that banks are showing profits by using a lame accounting tricks.  The WSJ reported that some of the banks using these tricks are: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup.  These banks have masked their risk levels over the last five quarters by temporarily lowering their debt just before they have to report to the public. This understates the debt levels used to fund securities trades by lowering them an average of 42% at the end of the last five consecutive quarterly periods.  This is how they continue to look profitable.  Retailer’s stocks are having the best year-over-year comparisons in a long time.  Greece looks like it will make it if they can pay loan-shark interest rates.  But wait…if everything is rosy with the recovery of the economy, why aren’t you feeling the effects?  Is everybody back out shopping at the malls, spending all their extra money?  Is the price of your home going up?  The home builders’ stocks are.  You have an unaffordable, depreciating, asset that just suffered the biggest drop in over 80 years, an excess of inventory on the market with more coming on every month, and a lack of qualified buyers, yet home builders’ stocks keep going up?  Are you getting dozens of pre-approved credit card applications in the mail, just like you did in 2007 – 2008?  You are probably getting none.  So if all this is true, why is everybody so giddy about the stock market?  My guess is the excitement.

All of my bank plays from last month  (C, BAC, and JPM) are up, with Citigroup jumping the most.  Watch for C to keep selling off parts of its business.  Banks are the highest they’ve been in 17 months and they are still showing signs of strength. I especially like Bank of America (BAC) as a day trading stock.  Citigroup is still a takeover contender, but go short on JPMorgan Chase (JPM).   Short Ford (F) near term, but watch for it to move back up when more bad news comes out about Toyota (TM).  Apple (AAPL) may come back and fill a gap around $242, so be careful.  It could also drop on some bad news, possibly product shortages, between now and the end of the month.  Watch for Research in Motion (RIMM) to fill its gap and go back up to around $83.  Watch for Best Buy (BBY) to lose steam around $47 and start dropping like a prom dress at midnight.  Watch for Microsoft (MSFT) to pull back to around $26.50.  Sell some calls on MSFT and buy them back when it falls.  The gold ETF (GLD) has made a double top pattern and watch for it to pullback a little, possibly to around $108.  The PowerShares QQQQ’s have also made a double top pattern.  Watch for a pullback.

When trading the market, watch for the RSI to move up over 80 before you sell or short and go long when the RSI is under 20. Don’t chase charts or try to guess which way an index or stock will go when the RSI is in “limbo”…over 30 and under 70. Stick with the Psychic Cat’s stock market magic!  Good trading!

Last week was the anniversary of the bottoming out of the stock market.  It was March 9, 2009 when the market hit bottom.  Since then, the market has been on a trajectory almost straight up. Not all sectors though, are doing well.  Lately, it has been the banks and high-tech sectors that have been driving the markets.  Banks are the highest they’ve been in 16 months and they are still showing signs of strength.  Especially the larger banks like Bank of America, Citigroup, and JP Morgan Chase.  I see BAC and JPM as long plays and Citigroup as a possible takeover target.  I would buy some long-term, out-of-the-money calls on C and hold them.  BAC and JPM are more short-term plays with BAC being a good day trading stock.  Internet stocks and certain biotechs are also good plays.  Watch for Pfizer (PFE) to find support around 15.50 and go long.  Do not enter a long trade until the RSI on PFE is 20 or less.  I believe that Intel (INTC) can break through 24 and, once it does, it could go to 26.50 – 27.00.   Amazon (AMZN) is another strong runner.  It’s current momentum could drive it through 140 up to 155 before a pullback.  If you feel uncomfortable picking individual high-tech stocks, I would play the Nasdaq composite index or the QQQQ.  When playing the indexes, watch for the RSI to move up over 80 before you sell or short and go long when the RSI is under 20.  Don’t chase charts or try to guess which way an index or stock will go when the RSI is in “limbo”…over 30 and under 70.  Stick with the Psychic Cat stock market magic!

If you are playing the commodities market, especially gold and silver, I believe silver will outperform gold.  Watch for silver to close above $19.  This will indicate that a strong run up is forming.  If you are playing gold, I would recommend staying away from the metal and play the miners.  A good way to play them is the GDX (Gold Miners ETF).  Again, watch the RSI for lows and highs in conjunction with volume and not necessarily the price.  Take small profits as the price moves within the limits I outlined above.  Good trading!

How to play my picks . . . I’ve explained before how to play my picks. . . watch for them to move the direction I said and look to take a small profit when you are up at least 2% or more (after commissions). Don’t get greedy. Especially if it looks like it may turn around. If you think it may continue going your way, sell half your position and move your stop up to your entry point. That’s it. If the stock returns a favorable profit Monday, then exit the position. Could you have made more? Maybe. Or you could have lost your gain in a reversal. You can either put an equal amount of money in each pick, or buy an equal number of shares. Either way, you’ll have a big fat cat smile on your face when you make money! And don’t forget to donate some of those profits to your local animal shelter. You’ll be glad you did and good Karma will come your way. I guess I’m just a Philanthra-Puss?

New Year’s resolution – control your trading emotions…

Let’s review what it takes to a successful trader?. . . Being an effective trader requires three important things…

1. Strategies

2. Rules

3. Consistent, emotionless actions

People who trade stocks on a daily basis know that true success relies on the psychological strength of the individual trader. First, the trader must have a strategy. What is your approach to trading the market? Do you look for the right momentum?…the right set-up?…or the right market conditions? Regardless of the type of strategy you have, once you see that strategy unfolding, you have to have certain rules you follow. Rules are important because the market can change dramatically in an instant. Rules are what keep you locked into your strategy. Rules help to ensure that your reactions to these market changes remain unbiased throughout your trade position. Strategies and their rules outline the consistent and disciplined actions taken. It’s this consistency in approach and trading tactics that makes a successful trader who lives to trade another day.

It takes time to become comfortable with a system for anything. What makes sticking to a market trading system difficult is the interference from your emotions. Even if you have specific rules for entering and exiting your trades, the powerful emotions of fear and greed find a way to creep in and cloud your judgment. The emotion of fear in trading shows up in two ways – fear of loss and fear of missing out. Fear of loss usually leads to selling a position prematurely and, as a result, you are not able to capitalize on the trade. You don’t allow the trade enough time to mature and you get out too early, entertaining a loss. Fear of missing out happens when traders abandon their rules so they can enter a trade before they miss any more of the move. Dealing with fear is imperative because it affects your decisions on entry and exit points. Fear makes you sell out too early and get in too late.

Greed is another powerful force. Greed is the basis for over-confidence in your trading. Desire to make a “big hit” will cloud a trader’s perspective. Greed causes traders to abandon their rules with the hopes that more money will come if they just hang in there. There is one major problem with this. Hope is not a strategy nor a rule that should govern your trading. Greed does not allow the trader to maintain their focus. It causes traders to “hang in there” too long on the way up and lose a significant part of their profits in a quick reversal. Or, hanging in there too long when a trade moves against you, hoping that it will turn around soon and move in your favor. This is exactly what the gambler at the blackjack table does. He sits there all night, doubling down, hoping that he can just get back to even.

It’s having a strategy, rules, and consistent, automatic, and emotionless actions that make you consistent profits in trading and allow you to live to trade another day. Meow for now….
