Technology In Healthcare

Technology hopes to change our medical system but faces many challenges. It would be a big step forward just to have people’s medical records online and easily accessible. Many current problems could be eliminated like losing someone’s file, inability to access information in an emergency, or just getting records to the right place quickly. In this day and age, doctor’s offices are still stacked to the ceiling with patient’s folders and we are faxing papers back and forth using technology from the 1970′s.

All In One Place

Having all your medical history on a smart card would be an ideal solution but can face many hurdles. All systems in the medical billing chain would have to be compatible and able to easily read information regardless of its source. Currently, paperwork has to be generated manually and sent to five or six different providers for different things. That’s like going to several different places to take your driver’s test…one place for right-hand turns, one for left, one for an eye test, and another for a parking test. It’s much more efficient for everyone and less expensive if you can do it in one spot.

Too Many Cooks Trying To Influence The Recipe

Suppose you had chefs in different restaurants all trying to bake the perfect apple pie. Everyone had their own little “twist” on a recipe that should be fairly simple and uncomplicated. But what you end up with is a pie that takes too long to make, may or may not taste good, and has an enormous price tag! Each customer that eventually gets a piece of the pie pays $500 for their slice. Also the ingredient that one chef put in may react poorly with ones the other chefs used. That’s how the current medical billing system works (or doesn’t work). Implementing technology to keep a person’s records should be the easiest part of the equation.

The System Is What’s Sick

With health care costs rising faster than anything else and becoming an increasing burden on citizens of the U.S., it appears that what’s sick is the system. Especially when you consider people are going to foreign countries for quality healthcare, performed by American-trained doctors and surgeons in spotless facilities with modern technology, and paying 20% of what the same procedures cost in the U.S. and recovering in 5-star resorts. There seems to be no technology solution to greed.
