Leaders who no longer serve the purposes of other countries as their puppet tend to become one and they are then labeled a terrorist. Or a group of people can become labeled as terrorists – sort of a group of boogie men – acting together to oppose the principles another country or group holds as “truths.” It’s when these “truths” get violated by someone else that people come unglued. The truth holder is very insulted or somehow their beliefs are violated to the point that the act must be responded to with violence. A book gets burned, a building is blown up, innocent people are killed by a suicide bomber, a rocket attack, a government attacks its own people, and other acts are all interpreted by those who are “violated” as an act that demands revenge. All of these acts happened because one person’s “truth” conflicted with another. People cling to their “truths” as god-given “rights” and sometimes interpret them as liberties, freedoms, and rules that were bestowed upon them by their ancestors, their religious leaders, their government, or maybe even god. Some people even believe that God, or his messenger on earth delivered these irrefutable truths to them. They are supposed to interpret them literally and defend them to their death while being intolerant of anyone who doubts them or criticizes them. Once ingrained into a society or a culture, people feel a need to force their truths upon others. Followers of one religion feel the need to kill people of other religions. Countries following one political ideology feel compelled to force their political ideals on other countries. Some countries have even felt compelled to establish empires, colonizing places far away, hoping that they will become like them or, at least, subservient and controlled long enough to steal their resources. What’s interesting is that the people who are forcing their opinions, beliefs, religion, politics, military or anything else on others all believe they are right. They are fighting for their truths; they’re defending their rights; they’re protecting all others who think the same way, and worst of all, they truly believe that they couldn’t possibly be wrong. They will perform unspeakable acts of violence and inhumanity to prove they are right. They will spend billions of dollars they can’t afford to show the opponent they are wrong or evil and they are right and good. In all of this, it’s always the other person or country that’s the terrorist. What must happen to break this cycle of terror that stems from people’s need to be right? What must be done to contain people’s outrage?
