Social media has been the agent of social as well as political change enabled by technology that didn’t exist a decade ago. To counteract social media-induced unrest, governments try to shut down the internet, shut off mobile networks, and cripple ISP’s in order to stop any real-time communications. It’s the real-time communications that enable real-time dissent. If you can put a stop to, or interrupt the communications, then you can buy time to counter the uprising and prepare your response. But it’s getting as hard for governments to suppress the Internet as it is to suppress the people. People everywhere are having their “I’ve had it” day. They are using technology to connect with others who feel the same way. In connecting with like-minded people, every available method of old and new technology will be incorporated to bring about change.
