At first, the extent of the damage at the reactors was unknown. After a week of conflicting reports, the true picture is beginning to appear. At first, a narrow area around the plants was evacuated. This area has been extended now several times. Hundreds of thousands are now homeless living in shelters and over 600,000 are without water and over 200,000 are still without electricity. Not only are so many without water, but people are squeezed into shelters without heat, warm food, and medicine. They are wondering what and where they will call home in the future. People in other countries are now becoming alarmed as radiation seems to be spreading in many directions. People have seen how the reports coming out of Japan at first were delayed and conflicted and are worried. How will this disaster spread and what countries will be affected? How will the lives of people outside of Japan be impacted? What will it take for Japan to recover and rebuild?
