All governments are susceptible to political corruption. At a lower level, there is using your office to do favors or receive them, appointing cronies or relatives to jobs, and selling your influence for gain. As a politician works his or her way up the government or bureaucratic ladder, resources many times get siphoned off and redirected, procedures are disregarded, and public money is spent on private matters and pleasures. Many times, public projects are awarded to family members and cronies. Corruption escalates in some communities with politicians assisting criminals with drug trafficking, money laundering and other illegal activities or, at the very least, turning a blind eye toward it. Politicians and bureaucratic leaders can get involved with small-time criminals or organized crime on a grand scale. Abuse seems to grow with the higher the level of office. Outright bribery and extortion replace giving your cousin a job. Influence peddling has a higher price tag attached to it and outright fraud enters the picture. Pretty soon, Unions, politicians with more clout, and maybe even criminal organizations or cartels are telling you what to do, who you will assign to your cabinet, and what laws and bills will get funded and passed or not. From the smallest municipal governments to the largest nations in the world, corruption plays a central role. While small town politicians get free meals or an occasional trip on taxpayer money, the Presidents and heads of some of the world’s poorest nations have embezzled billions of dollars from their people while in office. What is ironic is that some of these same nations have had natural disasters and had no money to help the people or rebuild the country and went begging to the international community. Is the end goal of corrupt politicians to have the entire world run by a network of thieves who all know each other? Are we creating a world where all semblance of honesty is abandoned? … Go ahead with your predictions and commentary…

However, new politicians gradually get initiated into corruption, especially in a small town. Self-interest groups and “old-boy” networks existed before they took office. Powerful town businessmen and leaders, both political and religious, have strong influence in a small community. Small towns also have a lack of transparency when it comes to decision-making. Small town politicians are also very poorly paid.
