In fact, the weather is the only part of the news that is a prediction. Highly trained meteorologists attempt to predict what the weather will be like weeks in advance. As they predict farther out, they are wrong more often than right. All the other news reported already happened and is now a history lesson that you can only react to. Weather is something you can plan for. There are now four times more weather disasters in the world than there were just two decades ago. They are mostly storms, flooding, and hurricanes/cyclones/tsunamis. Affecting twice as many people, due to increasing populations. Out of the 245 disasters in 2009, 224 were weather-related, affecting 55 million people out of 58 million. 7000 people were killed by weather disasters out of the 8900 killed by all disasters. And storms are getting stronger. More Category 5 hurricanes occurred during the last decade than since the 1960′s. And this trend seems to be continuing into the new decade. Tropical storms and hurricanes seem to be on people’s minds with regard to the oil spill. When Mother Nature’s power strikes man’s negligence it will teach new lessons to the country. This includes the weather – destructive weather as well as pleasant. The destruction caused by water-based weather events has been increasing because of the warming of the atmosphere.
