The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the raid by Israeli commandos on a flotilla of ships that were en route to the Gaza Strip. It’s been six weeks since the accident on the offshore drilling rig killed 11 people and the oil started gushing into the Gulf. Nothing that has been tried to stop the leak has worked and people are getting more and more frustrated and angry over the growing situation as the waters grow darker, affecting beaches, marshes, coastline industries, and people’s livelihoods. People whose lives have been damaged have initiated lawsuits against the companies involved and there is now talk of the US pursuing both civil and criminal investigations against the companies. People are wondering will this ever stop and what will our future look like? The world is criticizing Israel for the way they handled the commandeering of an activist flotilla bound for Gaza. Each side is saying they were right in doing what they did and pointing fingers at the other side as the aggressor in the situation. Israel says it has the right to prevent Hamas from arming itself by having weapons delivered by sea. Critics of Israel say that the blockade has plunged the people of Gaza into abject poverty and not hurt Hamas. The blockade seems to present a stalemate for all countries involved. The fact that Israel acted in International waters has also been questioned. It seems to be a situation where no side comes out a winner.
