One time when we stopped into a large national chain bookstore, I asked the young lady at the Information Desk, “Where is your Self-Help section?” Without missing a beat, she replied, “I could tell you, but it would defeat the purpose.” She paused a moment, giggled, and then pointed her finger and said, “Three aisles over that way.” I looked at her, smiled and followed her finger to arrive at the Self-Help section. It was amazing…a complete aisle with every type of personal development and self-help book you could imagine on both sides of the aisle. I figured a lot of people need help with a lot of different things. There were books on addictions, personal transformation, success, how to get motivated, stress management, self-esteem, relationships, wealth, health, happiness, emotional healing, self-defeating behaviors, management, coaching, unworthiness, procrastination, spiritual development, and dozens more topics. Not only were there all these topics, but subjects were divided into groups…books for women, books for men, for kids, for teens, for seniors, for workers, for management, for singles, for couples, for people who love too much, for people who don’t love enough, and many other sub-groups and behavioral niches. It seems everybody is looking for personal development and improvement and there are thousands of authors willing to write a book telling them what they need to do to get it. But is it that simple? Can you just read a book written by someone who doesn’t know you and find happiness, lose weight, lose your stress, quit smoking, become a millionaire, become motivated, heal your emotions, and become someone everybody loves? Considering that some accounts show self-help literature going back thousands of years, you would think that people would have it figured out by now. Apparently not, as the self-help/self-improvement industry grows each year and is projected to reach $14 billion in 2010. Self-help authors even outsell many blockbuster novelists.
