While fear, uncertainty and doubt is a tactic of rhetoric and fallacy used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics, and propaganda, it can also be used to describe an environment that people currently find themselves immersed in economically and culturally. An environment of FUD can be used to obscure issues, move masses of people in a certain direction quickly, and pit nation against nation. FUD can be applied to a large issue, like the global economic crisis, or to an individual where it leads to self-doubt, uncertainty about one’s future, and fear of making decisions. When a person or nation becomes immersed in FUD, sometimes they are able to take action and at other times not. Non-action leads to no risk taking which means missed opportunities that may have eliminated the FUD. Taking the action to make a decision despite FUD may not always work out, but taking the action alone helps to alleviate some of the FUD and makes it easier to continue making decisions.
