Most people didn’t believe it at the time, but can see how that prediction came true now. First, repetitive task jobs were sent overseas. Then came computerized machinery that did high-precision tasks that only skilled, licensed machinists previously did. Next, robots began assembling things as big as cars and as small as watches. With machines doing the work, watching the machine became a new job. Then, when a computer could watch the machine, these types of assembly lines were set up overseas. A person or machine can just as easily put four screws in an assembly in another country for .10 cents an hour as a person can in the US for $25.00 per hour or more. Technology turned industrialized countries into service, financial and information societies. The technology jobs that were left – mainly in computer hardware and software – are now also leaving the Western countries. As jobs go to emerging-economy countries, these countries become industrialized and the cycle starts again. Technology is the driving force behind job loss in industrialized countries. As a terrible recession has set in globally, many of the jobs that were lost in industrialized nations will never return.
